Yellow-crowned night heron in Williamson Creek

August 15, 2019

Williamson Creek borders our yard and 98% of the time it’s dry.  But when it rains here in Austin it really rains, and the creek can become a raging torrent.  When the water subsides a little it often then teams with new life.

This yellow-crowned night heron visited us on May 4, 2019 and spent the night scanning the creek hopefully for something to eat (the frogs and fish didn’t arrive until the next evening, unfortunately for the heron).  These herons are unusual in the Austin area – we had never seen one before – and we were fascinated to see such an exotic-looking bird.  Yellow-crowned night herons apparently migrate through here on their way to Mexico and Central America in search of warmer weather.
