The trilling of a screech owl in the still of our nighttime backyard is one of my favorite sounds. In my imagination, screech owls sound like little ghosts and, if I were a child, it might be hard to convince me that the yard isn’t haunted.
Dan has spent years perfecting his techniques for capturing these beautiful little birds on video. He has set up perches that they love and use every night; his cameras are positioned to record them in close-up without intruding; his infrared lighting illuminates the owls without blasting them out; and his mics are now recording them as they sing.
We challenge you to find better video showing these owls singing. We don’t think it exists. Most of the videos we’ve found show still photos with sound recorded elsewhere. (Let us know in the comments if you do find something – we love watching this stuff and we’d really like to see it.)
