Baby raccoons are lovely little creatures. They’re sweet, they’re smart, they’re brave, and they have a sense of humor. They’re really fun to be around.
We don’t know how this little one ended up spending the day by herself. Normally, she’d be with her mama and siblings, but somehow she wound up in this tiny bird box – which fortunately for us happens to have one of Dan’s cameras in it – and we got to spy on her.
Without her brothers and sisters she had no one to play with and so she entertained herself by playing with her own feet.
Aren’t they great little feet though? They’re shaped a bit like human feet. Raccoons’ wet footprints are very human. Sometimes, when the raccoons have been in and out of their pool and playing on the deck, it looks as if we’ve had a bunch of toddlers running around.
We felt kind of sorry for this little one – all by herself all day – but she was such fun to watch, and honestly, she seemed perfectly happy. She snoozed, she yawned, she stretched, she played with her toes. And then at dusk she climbed out of the box and rejoined her family up on the deck for a swim in the pool.
