Have you ever seen an opossum yawn? No? Well, here you go.
This little video shows an American opossum who was hanging out down near the burrow we at TBW call the Mos Eisley (after the cantina in Star Wars that was open to creatures from all over the galaxy – our friend Marion in Berlin suggested the name).
S/he must have been tired, or perhaps the cantina had been a little dull that evening? Whatever the reason, this opossum yawned the biggest, widest yawn ever yawned. Dan wondered if perhaps he used a basketball as a chew toy.
I asked Dan why an opossum would ever need to have a bite that big* and he said “Maybe they like to raid watermelon patches?”.
* I grew up in New Zealand, where we have Australian possums, and they’re totally different animals. Marsupials, but that’s about the only resemblance.
