We don’t very often claim that our videos are the best out there, but this one, truly, is the best. We’ve searched online for footage of eastern screech owls mating, and nothing comes close to this video for quality, clarity, and audio.
According to the experts, including the late, great Fred Gehlbach, eastern screech owls mate in late winter, from February to March. However, the owls in this video were caught on camera in early May. Perhaps their first nest failed? Or perhaps the February – March timing isn’t set in stone? We don’t know.
The clip opens with beautiful trilling from the female screech owl; she’s calling her mate in. He arrives, they mate, and it’s over in a matter of seconds.
Every year we cross our fingers and hope that a screech owl family will nest in one of our boxes but so far, no luck. However, we do feel lucky to be able to watch them on camera and capture great videos, like this one.
