We’ve put lots of old stumps in the den playpens because the gray foxes here love to sit on them and snooze on them. They’re perfectly safe for baby foxes – triple-A tested safe, in fact – and yet sometimes, somehow the little foxes manage to slide off them while dreaming their little foxy dreams.
We don’t know how it happens; we don’t even understand how it’s possible. The stumps aren’t moving, they’re not sitting on a slope, they’re not in a boat on a stormy sea, but sleeping fox kits fall off them all the time.
They always recover quickly, and they always look embarrassed: “Did anyone see that? Please tell me no one was watching. I’ll NEVER live it down”.
