Hawks are powerful birds – swift fliers, big, and very strong. How is it that they can zoom toward a perch and nail their landings, stopping in a split second without ever allowing all that momentum to topple them forward?
We see it every day. They go from fast flight to perching in an instant. No wobbling, no lurching. Think about it – it’s a pretty neat trick. (And actually, hawks are not the only birds who do this, they’re just the most fun to watch.)
In this video we show how it’s done. As the hawk nears a perch. for a brief moment it’s almost horizontal – leaning back with legs outstretched and wings like a paraglider. It all happens too fast for us to appreciate, but in slow motion the magic is revealed.
