Hoopoes nesting in an ancient church wall in southwest France

This video is clearly not from our backyard, but we couldn’t resist sharing it – and perhaps we can get a special dispensation for videos filmed in a friend’s backyard?

A pair of hoopoes had nested in a nook inside the wall of an ancient (11th century) church near Lubersac in southwest France in July of 2019. We filmed the parents’ spellbinding arrivals and departures as they fed their two chicks – they’re extraordinary looking birds.

Hoopoes migrate to southern France each year from their over-wintering home in Africa.
