Cardinals reject a good meal: “Anyone want this bug?”

Adult cardinals are largely vegetarian – they eat seeds, grains, and fruit – but Mrs C found a sizeable caterpillar on a stump one day and considered branching out. She pecked at it a couple of times (poor caterpillar) while Mr C looked on, and then decided it was not her kind of thing. Mr C pecked at it, too, but clearly it wasn’t his kind of thing, either, and so he and the Mrs flew off to find lunch elsewhere.

A minute later, along came a Bewick’s wren. Bewick’s wrens are decidedly not vegetarian and the caterpillar was gone.
