For years, mama rock squirrels have brought up their babies in our wood pile. The wood pile is right outside our kitchen windows and every summer we have hours of fun watching the little ones playing, scuffling, and hanging out their mama on the window ledge.
It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful creature than a baby rock squirrel. There are five in this video. I don’t know how old they are – the mama always keeps them hidden away in their burrow until they’re more or less weaned – and these little guys had been out and about for a few weeks.
Last summer, the wood pile was shared by a family of native Texas rats. A couple of adults and 4 or 5 youngsters. Also beautiful, with translucent ears and busy little hands. The rats would come out at night – usually – to eat any seeds that the birds and rock squirrels had left behind. Occasionally, they’d come out during the day and the baby rock squirrels were most disapproving.
