Gray fox kits like to lie around in a pile. Even on a hot Texas summer day, lying on top of a sibling seems to be a whole lot more fun than having some breathing room. The smallest fox kits, especially, like togetherness, and in this video we see one of this summer’s small kits trying to get comfortable on a very patient older half-sibling.
A little background about these foxes:
During the summer of 2025, we were lucky enough to be able to watch two fox families – or one big extended family, depending on how you count your families – in the tree stump den and the magic tree den. There were two mamas, one father, and two litters of three kits each, one litter obviously a few weeks older than the other.
They all moved into the tree stump den at the end of May 2025, stayed a week, and then moved out again. At the end of June, four of the kits (two large and two small) moved back in for one more week, mostly supervised by one of the mamas and the very busy papa. The two remaining kits were off somewhere else with mama #2.
Finally at the end of July, two small kits were moved into the magic tree den and they stayed four weeks. It was great. They were looked after by mama #1, by their papa, and – amazingly – by Pale Fox. By this time we had decided that Pale Fox and Dolly must have been the grandparents. Pale Fox, ultimately, took on most of the care of these two little gray foxes; he was sweet, playful, attentive, and very loving. A model grandparent.
