Raccoons are natural goofballs. Once they feel fed and watered and safe, if there’s nothing else going on, they play. There’s a little cedar elm to the left of the big water bowl tree that has recently become one of their favorite playscapes. They like to run up it and then hang upside down from a worryingly thin branch that could break at any second but somehow, amazingly, has not.
Our friend Marion, who watches the livestream from Berlin, calls these raccoons “the acrobats”. It’s a perfect description of them. They’re strong, they’re agile, and they’re very flexible. And luckily for us, the cedar elm is also surprisingly strong and flexible. The tree and the critters have something in common.
