A rattlesnake in the underground tree stump den

We rarely see rattlesnakes here, but this one was a beauty – a diamond-back, we think. At about 4ft/1.2 m long, he/she wasn’t the biggest snake in the world, but around here, that’s pretty sizable. He moved into the tree stump den shortly after one of our fox families from the spring of 2021 had vacated it, and left shortly before another family arrived at the den to check it out. We were relieved that he didn’t overlap with any of them.

We managed to get some good video of the snake while he was in residence.
